Group House Living in DC: How It Works

Group house living in DC: shared kitchens, cleaning services, house dynamics, and who thrives in a shared home.

Most DC rooms for rent are rooms in group houses — several adults sharing a house, each with a private bedroom. If you've only ever lived solo or with family, here's how it actually works.

The structure

Each housemate has a private bedroom and shares the kitchen, bathrooms, living areas, and laundry. Our houses range from 5–6 bedrooms. Everyone signs onto the house's master lease structure; one person per room, always.

What makes it work

Who thrives in group houses

People who are out living their lives — working, exploring the city, social — and want home to be comfortable without being a second job. If you need total silence and control over every shared surface, a studio is the honest answer; for everyone else, a group house is DC's best value by a wide margin.
